Yorkshire Old Boys League Results for 11th December 2004

Hold tight for this week is a white-knuckle ride. The Old Boys Shield 2nd round game at East Riding Amateur League champions AFC Charleston was a cup tie classic. Man of the match Lydon Watson gave St Nicholas a first half lead. The home side went ahead 2-1 only for Ryan Harwood to level the scores from a penalty with seven minutes of ordinary time left on the clock. AFC Charleston retaliated with a third goal but substitute Mark Turner hit the equaliser with four minutes of extra time to go. A penalty shoot out won by St Nicholas 3-1 with Mark Turner, Dave Jordan and Lydon Watson converting with only one success for AFC Charleston. A vital save by Phil McNamara at 1-2 in the shoot out.

Senior A leaders Leeds Medics were satisfied with a point at Collegians. Collegians took an early 2-0 lead but Medics levelled at half time. Another Medics goal early in the second half was equalised by Collegians to make it 3-3. The first goals conceded by Medics in the league after 630 minutes football. Collegian scorers were Ricky Lodge, Johnny Lodge and Paul Bravo. Medics’ responses came from Anthony Morris, Tom Fearnley and Nick Turnbull. Roundhegians were two goals ahead against Old Rovers thanks to an Imran Mughal brace. The half time Old Rovers team talk inspired Paul Dodd with two and Tom Fay, the latter bagging the winner 8 minutes from time. Yorkshire Bank went 4-0 up in nine minutes against Adel OB as Gareth Huxall, Andy Clark, Phil Beesting and John Metcalf gave them a seemingly unassailable lead. Adel pulled one back by half time and a further three in the second half to draw 4-4 and take them off the bottom. The Houdinis were Ben Wilkinson 2, Alex Koi and debutant Ben Patton who scored the equaliser. Abbey Grange dominated the first half against Leeds University Union. A 1-0 lead into half time through a Phil Teggart OG but Bobby Stephenson and Elliott Hakner nosed University ahead 2-1 only for Jay Chambers to secure Abbey a hard-earned point but still leave University undefeated in the league. Trinity strolled to a 4-1 half time lead against Old Modernians and won eventually 5-2. Tom Priestley, Denis Katoro, an og and Mark Ryan in the first half and a 30 yard screamer from Denis Kataro accounted for the Trinity goals, James Hochstrasse and Stef Papa replied for Mods.

Three wins on the trot for Ealandians in Senior B as the highly rated Jason Tiplady struck all four in the 4-1 defeat of FC Headingley for whom Johnny Stanford obliged. Yorkshire Bank Res won a six-pointer at Colton Academicals 4-2. Goals by Dave Wright and Mike Ashworth for Colton were insufficient to prevent Andy Keale 2, Paul Scantlebury and Chris Corcoran lifting Bank Res off the bottom. Previously third placed Medics Res succumbed 4-0 to the effervescent Steve Palfrey who hit 3 and the essential Shaun Coggill 1 as Western Juniors improved their second place from merely goal difference to one point. Huddersfield Amateur goes third by dismissing East Ardsley Wanderers 4-0 with Si Bick, Paul Speake, Joe Smith and Matt Binks taking the chances. Griffordians beat erstwhile promotion challengers Old Batelians 8-2.  An unusual result for two mid table sides although bizarrely it finished 8-4 last year. Mark Inwood and Craig Stephenson for battered Batelians with Lee Thrush 2, Nick Burrett 2, Gary Schofield, James Thompson, Matthew Massey and Ben Keedy keeping Griffordians focused.

In Division 1 a humdinger at Heckmondwike as the home side, in a game played at a fast tempo, defended strongly to win 3-1 against a skilful Bramley Juniors side. Adam Clayton gave Heckmondwike an early lead from the spot and that the same player increased the margin to 2-0 just after the break. Peter Leonard added a cracking third but with five minutes to go Bramley scored through Ryan Thorpe to give the scoreline a realistic appearance. George Smith and Craig Jessey goals enabled Woodhouse Moor Methodists to hold Medics III 2-2 and for Woodhouse to stay in second slot. Joe Cook and Rick Atkinson 2 gave Thornesians a 3-2 win over struggling Mods III. Mods Reserves hit all six in the last 30 minutes through Mark Thomas, Buddy Keville 2, Ian Lawrenson, Keith Fenton and Richard Goldsack to trounce Abbey Grange Res. Agnes Stewart first clean sheet of the season with Kev Myers and Lee Chesters giving them a 2-0 win at Sandal Wanderers. Roundhegians scored seven goals to go third in a twelve-goal thriller at Commonside OB. Michael Kempton with three, Paul Gilroy 2, Rob Lewis-Brookes with a belter and Matt Abosch for Roundhegians Res with the goals for Commonside from Steve Mackenzie 2, Carleton Whiteley, Steve Body and an og. St Bedes toasted a Colin Smith treble and a Jason Ryan first as Calverley took a 4-0 backseat. Wortley march on in Division 2 with a 3-1 win at Bedes Reserves with Dave Hewson, skipper John Hairyes and new signing Ian Lamb on the mark for Wortley. Leeds Independent goes second.  Roundhegians III took a two-goal lead but goals from Daniel Bell, Mike Preece and Darren Donnell clinched a narrow 3-2 Leeds Independent success.

What season Nev? 2003/4?

I remember the 6-0 game at Mods, we were only 1-0 down with half an hour to go Daz Elliott missed when he should have passed to me (a fairly regular occurance for several years) and we fell apart in the fourth quarter.

Happy days

Rubbed out the full date. Was 04/05

How could anyone with legs shaped like Daz be expected to pass the ball?

Yorkshire Old Boys League Results for 20th December 2003

In the Wheatley Cup Old Batelians came back from 3-2 down against Dewsbury Moor Athletic to win by 4-3 with goals from Craig Stephenson 2, Mark Inwood and Chris Porritt. They reach the quarter final as do Wheelwright OB who convincingly defeated Thornhill by 3-0 with Aidi Thomas, Gez Long and Shaun Hardwick netting. Commonside OB was the only unsuccessful Old Boys League side on the day pitted against opposition outside our league, being hammered at Overthorpe.

In the Leeds Senior Cup Old Centralians through Jimmy Abram 2, Olly Smith and Johnny Brockett easily overcame Colton Academicals 4-0. Bank beat Original Oak in a match full of good football by 2-1 with a 75-yard fluke from Steve Tennant and a well worked Phil Beesting goal. Stanningley OB overcame Upper Armley OB with a 4-2 win with Shaun Daley 2, Martin McGhee and Steve Carter wearing the shooting boots.

In the Leeds District Cup a Paul Kempton hat trick and a fourth Old Headingley goal from Matt Powell were too much for Whitkirk 'A' who failed to reply. Bramley Juniors needed extra time to beat stubborn opponents Wortley OB 6-3. 3-2 up at half time through Richard Hairyes 2 and Richard Howard Wortley succumbed eventually to Jamie Shaw 2, Nathan Floyd, Leroy Watson, Andy Horsman and Michael Harrison. Leeds Independent bravely held on at 2-3 down with up to 5 minutes to go thanks to a Michael Preece brace before highflying Griffordians eased home 5-2 with super striker Ben Keedy notching 4 and Matt Massey with the fifth. Surprise of the day when second division Centralians Res through pocket battleship Scott Cosgrove 2 and Rob Cahill 1 beat Senior B Trinity Old Boys 3-2. Leeds Medics Res were delighted with their 3-2 win against Rothwell Athletic Res as Andy Mitchell 2 and Nick Akerman enjoyed the day.

Roundhegians outstanding season continues with a 7-1 thrashing of out of sorts Modernians. Steve Wales went nap aided by Brandon Noble one and Imran Mughal one making it 9 wins from 9 games. Leeds Medics & Dentists continued their journey to safety as Steve Slater 2 and Richard Robinson 2 helped to give Medics their first win of the year. They beat fellow strugglers Collegians by 4-2 with Ricky Lodge and Michael Turner unable to turn the tide for Collegians. Abbey Grange OB now joins Old Rovers in joint third with Old Rovers retaining third slot despite losing 5-1. Alvin Johns, Stu Whittle 2 and Ged Togher 2 were on target for Abbey with the consolation goal coming from Paul Dodd for Old Rovers.

Sandal Wanderers continues its climb up the table with a 3-2 win at Western Juniors. Richard Brooke, Dave Shaw and Paul McIntosh scored for the winners with Thomas Moore and Richard Farrar for the losers. Ealandians made Yorkshire Bank Res pay for two recent Ealandians setbacks by winning 9-1. Stuart Atkinson 2, Mark Heptonstall 3, Gareth Griffiths, Ryan Klemp Lee Bamber and James Parkinson made the day for Ealandians.

Abbey Grange Reserves, now second in the table, had two penalties saved by Andy Corker in the Calverley goal but still managed to win 2-0 thanks to a Mark Smith double. St Bedes Reserves eased their relegation worries by beating Woodhouse Moor 5-4 rejoicing in an Ali Faisal hat trick and 2 from Danny Burke.

In Division two the battle at the bottom ended 2-2 with Roundhegians III and Almondburians Res sharing the spoils. Lew Pinkerton and Craig Davey helped snatch a point for Roundhegians III as Mark Sutton and Liam Brothers bagged one each for Almondburians Res.  Adel Res twice surrendered a lead as they drew 2-2 in an excellent game against Collegians Res. Adel Res thank Anthony Bray and Matthew Wilson for helping them gain the point to keep them third to bottom despite the John Livsey pair for Collegians Res.
Modernians III go second with a fine 5-2 win at lowly Heckmondwike Res. Michael Charlesworth 2, Peter Bradley, Richard Burns and Jamie Charlesworth for Modernians III.

St Bedes III jumped to second place in Division 3 with a convincing 4-1 win over Abbey Grange III. Early festive celebrations for Mark Hayward 2, Will Kerr and Shane Foster for Bedes with Alex Fannon responding for Abbey. Sam Newman 2 and Mark Gilman enabled Batelians to raise their glasses and toast a 3-2 win over Ealandians Res as Batelians rise to sixth.

Re: Look Back - But not in Anger

Yorkshire Old Boys league fixtures for 7th, February 2004

Bramley Juniors magical WRFA challenge trophy run ended with their being beaten by Moldgreen Conservatives 4-3 in the quarter final. Bramley Juniors took a 2-0 half time lead through Leroy Watson and Jamie Shaw. With the wind at their backs Moldgreen's Andrew Armitage scored four fabulous second half goals with Jamie Shaw adding a third for Bramley at the final whistle.

The Marflitt Trophy Matches provided plenty of interest in appalling conditions. St Nicholas beat Trinity OB 2-0 with a sizzling first half goal from Chris Hitchings after a searing run. David Hames added a late second half goal to ensure that St Nicholas plays Yorkshire Bank in the semi-final. Bank beat their old rivals Leeds University Union in a tetchy game. John Metcalf with a spectacular free kick and Andy Clark made it 2-0 for the Bank with Dermot Grumley replying for University Union to make it 2-1 and he was denied the equaliser by a last ditch Al Underwood tackle.  Abbey Grange OB avoided the pitfalls of playing a talented team from a lower division as they beat Wetherby based Old Headingley 2-1. Matty Byfield and an o.g for Abbey with Peter Tebay netting the Old Headingley reply. Abbey Grange plays the winners of the Old Thornesians and Old Collegians tie in the semi-final. Thornesians reached the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Alwoodley as Jason Brooke as scored one of the Thornesians goals.

Centralians Reserves beat shell shocked St Bedes Reserves by 6-3 after extra time in the Hancock Cup Semi-final. The goals came from Scott Cosgrove 2, Lee Thompson, skipper Andy Harrison, Martin "Bomber " Harris and Richard Lofts as Centralians Reserves look forward to meeting Leeds Medics Reserves in the final.

The Hodgson Cup semi final between Medics III and Yorkshire Bank II was an enthralling contest. The Bank took a 2-0 lead through Alan Dickinson and Al Slatter. Medics III pulled back through Matt Bridge and Chris Smith to make it 2-2 at full time. A penalty for Medics III from Alan Davies made it 3-2 and with three minutes to go the Bank III team missed a penalty well saved by Rod in the Medics III goal as everyone else turned away. "Poor Lad" as Eddie Waring once famously said. Thus a Medics double as the thirds prepare to play Roundhegians III in the final.

In senior A referee Francis Seruwagi took the players off for 10 minutes to avoid the driving hail at Modernians. The hosts enjoyed the conditions better and won with a convincing 4-0 scoreline as Buddy Keville, James Hochstrasse, Tom Roo and Stuart Featherstone scored. Leeds Medics are at last getting the points they deserve as they reach the comfort of mid-table thanks to a goal from Captain Marvel Paddy Coughlin against Centralians. Adel FC, without a win since the first match of the season, won 1-0 at Almondburians to lift them off the bottom.

Amazing match in Division 4 when Alwoodley Res beat Huddersfield Amateur III 10-5 in a game of fine attacking football. Paul Wally hit seven wonderful goals for Alwoodley Res with the rest coming from Jim Bayes, Rory Goldthorpe and Matt Raistrick.

In Senior B Stanningley OB were surprisingly held by Colton Academicals 1-1, which keeps Colton in third place. Stanningley OB scored from an o.g with Wayne Johnson striking for Colton Academicals. Stanningley are now 8 points behind leaders Old Batelians and have 4 games in hand. Griffordians misery continues with a third successive league defeat - this time at Ealandians. Stuart Atkinson 2 and James Parkinson for Ealandians was one goal too many for Ben Keedy and Kev Gough for Griffordians. Man of the match Kyle Wainwright and Matt Bestington made it a narrow 2-1 win for East Ardsley against Sandal Wanders and their solitary Neil Mumby strike. Western Juniors were too lively for Yorkshire Bank Res to the tune of 3-2. Dave Jones and Andy Heath for Bank but not sufficient to keep Sean Cogill, Steve Palfrey and Tim Benson off the Western score-sheet. Medics Res consolidated their mid-table position with a 4-0 win over Huddersfield Amateur with Joe Murtagh 2, Adam Herbstritt and Peter Young striking it rich.

Rob Ormerod's strike for FC Headingley was not sufficient to beat jinx side Modernians Reserves.  FC Headingley remains top of Division 1 despite the Steve Humphries equaliser for Modernians Res. Calverley cemented their fourth position with goals from Damion Myers, an o.g, Sam Appleby and Darren Smith against Woodhouse Moor Meths. Welcome win for Commonside as boybandsman Michael Bateman hit a hat trick and Calv Dunning the fourth in the 4-3 defeat of Heckmondwike GSOB. Solid 2-0 win for Roundhegians Res at St Bedes OB thanks to Paul Gilroy and Robert Lewis Brookes.

Re: Look Back - But not in Anger

Yorkshire Old Boys League Results for 29th, April 2006

Last Wednesday Heckmondwike GSOB and Griffordians drew their Marflitt Trophy Final at Ealandians 2-2. Adel OB ground was selected for the replay and like the first match the sides were level 2-2 at full-time.  It was Heckmondwike who finally broke the deadlock with a goal three minutes from the end of extra-time to clinch a 3-2 victory. This was the first time ever that two Senior B sides had competed in the final for the Trophy and both sides were a credit to Senior B. Heckmondwike took the lead after 4 minutes through Adam Clayton. After 17 minutes Lee Thrush equalised for Griffordians who then went ahead 2-1 in the 21st minute following a Ben Keedy piece of opportunism. Adam Clayton equalised in the second half and he completed a magnificent hat trick with the decisive winning goal. A fine season for Heckmondwike who are already assured of Senior A football next season after a gap of 14 seasons. The cup win is the first in the club’s long history in a never to be forgotten campaign.

Yorkshire Bank are already Senior A champions but were severely tested by Old Modernians whose late season rally will not save them from the drop. A rare headed goal by Si Newton for Bank and a response from Richard Marsh for Modernians meant that honours were even at 1-1. Western Juniors halted their damaging losing sequence by beating Old Collegians 3-0 with goals from Steve Roberts, Ricky Burrow and Steve Palfrey with the latter making it 20 league goals including a Monday night hat trick in a 4-2 win over Roundhegians. On Saturday Roundhegians took a 2-0 lead against Leeds University OB thanks to Lew Pinkerton and Liam Kelly but University rallied in the second half to force their ninth draw of the season with a goal from the experienced Nick Forbes and one from Mark Flanagan. St Nicholas were at their best and beat a muted Trinity who await their Old Boys Shield final against Malet Lambert YC Hull tonight with a 7.30 kick off. Two goals for leading scorer Paul Graham, one for David Hames and one for Gary O’Driscoll for St Nicholas prior to the late Denis Katoro consolation for Trinity.

One match in Senior B but Huddersfield Amateur beat FC Headingley 6-1 thanks to two own goals, two from Matt Donlan and a goal each for second team skipper Olly Crosland and another second teamer - the promising Paul Cornthwaite. Already assured of promotion, Huddersfield need to win their last two games to pip Heckmondwike GSOB for the Senior B title after losing to a Jimmy Abrams 35 yard special in the 1-0 Monday night defeat at Centralians.

Wonderful season for Wortley OB who clinched the Division 1 title by beating promoted rivals Bramley Juniors 3-1. Wortley took a 3-0 half time lead thanks to Rob Whiteley 2 and Michael Richmond. Wortley have lost only 7 league games in three seasons as they climb through the Divisions. Denis Metcalf with the second half goal for a Bramley side that never gave up in an excellent contest. Agnes Stewart went 2-0 up after 20 minutes against St Bedes and this was sufficient to stave off relegation but goals by Danny Burke before half time and Dave Sharp 12 minutes from the end meant a nail-biting finish to the game. Thornesians whacked luckless Mods III by 7-0 with goals from Matty Cappleman 2, Ryan Cutten 2, Gareth Hill 2 and Nick Bowen.

Wortley Res made it a season to remember by taking the Division 3 title after an 8-2 win at an admiring Thornesians Res. Chris Bolland and Mark Binks for Thornes Res. The goals in the Wortley Res triumph came courtesy of Curt Lewis with 5, Wayne Rushfirth, Adam Chadwick and Adam Karran with Ashley Crowther selected by Thornesians Res as the Wortley Res man of the match. The league title complements their winning the Hancock Cup and, with the first team winning Division 1, this has been a marvellous season for the Wortley club as a whole. Final day excitement at the bottom of Division 3 as Roundhegians Res won at Batelians Res 2-0 with goals from Darren Barry and Dave Braddock thereby securing a great escape.

Elsewhere Adel Reserves and Wheelwright drew 3-3 in Div 1 with Adel Res already guaranteed second place. Anthony Bray, Alex Wharton, 25th of the season and Rob Wilkinson 18th of the season for Adel with Craig Fryer 15th league goal, Adam Ainsworth and Paul Fozard for Wheelwright.

Luke Croager bagged three for division 4 champions Shire Academics in the 7-2 win at Sandal Wdrs Res but Luke finished one short of 50 league goals for the season despite his colleagues’ efforts to try and provide the perfect chance for his fiftieth.

Colton suddenly goes second in Div 5 with a super 6-2 win at Mods VI. A hat trick for James Baldwin with support from Matty Feaviour, Ryan Mitchell and Kev Gommersall. Heckmondwike III needs to beat Collegians III on Wednesday evening to leapfrog Colton and regain their promotion place.
