YORKSHIRE OLD BOYS SHIELD
SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC 4 VS 2 WHEELWRIGHT O.B.
Wheelwright exited the 1st round of the Yorkshire Old Boys Shield for the 2nd year running after coming up against a young, fit and well drilled Scarborough side.
Wheelwright started the game positively and played some good football with strikers Dan Gannon and Martyn Thompson both going close. Mid way through the 1st half a defensive mix up between Chris Kay and Ady Thomas gifted the ball to the on rushing striker who squared the ball to his partner who tapped home into the empty net.
The 2nd half was much more open as the away side tried to get back on level terms, but playing on the break the home side caught the Dewsbury side out and a cool finish meant a 2-0 lead. Wheelwright never gave in, and pulled a goal back when a great bit of individual skill from Danny Gannon found his shot come off the post and into the bottom corner of the net. Just when the visitors sensed an upset, the fitness levels started to play apart and the young Athletic side started to find gaps in the Wheelwright team as scored a well taken 3rd goal to just about killed the game off. Wheelwright to their credit still pushed forward with Daz Green, Ian Kennady, and a close range header from Mathew Robinson was well saved on the line. The game was all but finished when with 15 minutes to go the away stopper Dan Heap went on a mazy run and instead of clearing his line he was robbed of the ball and from twenty yards out the home striker scored in the empty net. The Dewsbury side did mange the last word when last seasons leading marksmen Thompson found space and his lob came off the post and into the bottom corner as the game ended 4-2.
Wheelwright can take heart from this game against a very good young Scarborough outfit.
Wheelwright will be hoping to now put their efforts back into the league next Saturday, when Leeds Medics come to town for what will be the 1st league game at Sands Lane this season.
